Reports claim hackers have attacked the world’s top one hundred universities as a protest against tuition fees and the falling quality of education.
GhostShell a hacking team associated with Anonymous dumped information from 120K user accounts and student records after hitting servers at institutions such as Princeton, Harvard, Cambridge and Imperial College London. Universities in Moscow, Rome and Tokyo were also hit in a string of server breaches that spanned three continents.
The leaked information includes email addresses, passwords, the names of students and faculty members, event schedules and other sensitive data.
GhostShell said many of the university systems it infiltrated were already riddled with malware.
